CHICAGO, Aug. 4 (UPI) -- Conservative commentator Robert Novak, who outed CIA operative Valarie Plame in his column, announced his retirement following the diagnosis of a brain tumor.
Describing the diagnosis as "dire," Novak said "the tentative plan is for radiation and chemotherapy," The Chicago Sun-Times reported Monday.

Novak was known for his decades-long syndicated column and television partnership with Rowland Evans, which lasted until Evans's death in 2001.
The Evans-Novak column was distributed first by Publishers Newspaper Syndicate on May 15, 1963, with the New York Herald-Tribune. When the newspaper folded in 1966, the Chicago Sun-Times became their home newspaper.
