Fighting erupts in eastern Afghanistan

KHOST, Afghanistan, July 27 (UPI) -- Fighting in eastern Afghanistan Sunday claimed the lives of an undetermined number of Afghan police officers and insurgents, officials said.

A spokesman for the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force, ISAF, told CNN a battle in Khost province produced insurgent deaths in the "double-digit" range while a "small number" of police officers died.

ISAF officials said armed militants attacked police early Sunday morning and the ISAF responded with ground troops and aerial strikes.
