ST. JOHN'S, Antigua and Barbuda, July 6 (UPI) -- Cuba's foreign minister is urging Panama to seek the extradition of accused anti-Castro plotter Luis Posada Carriles from the United States.
Felipe Perez Roque said Posada Carriles, suspected of planning an assassination attempt on Cuban President Fidel Castro, is a "very, very dangerous terrorist" who should be transported to Panama to stand trial for his alleged part in the plot, The Miami Herald reported Sunday.
Posada Carriles was arrested as a terrorist in Panama in 2000, but was pardoned by the government four years later and is now living at an undisclosed location in Miami, the newspaper said. The Panama Supreme Court, however, has thrown out the pardon as unconstitutional and now the government is considering issuing an arrest warrant.
"We hope the next step is … the extradition of Posada Carriles to Panama to face the trial that was developing at that moment when he left to the United States," Roque told the Herald at a meeting of the Caribbean Community leaders in Antigua and Barbuda.
