Alleged Nazi criminal taped in Austria

KLAGENFURT, Austria, June 16 (UPI) -- Britain's The Sun newspaper said it has captured video of an alleged Nazi war criminal Austrian officials claim is too ill for extradition.

Milivoj Asner, 95, who is accused of sending hundreds of Jews, Gypsies and Serbs to their deaths in Nazi camps during his tenure as a police chief under Croatia's fascist Ustashi regime during World War II, was videotaped walking with his wife for more than a mile without using a cane in Klagenfurt, Austria, The Sun reported Monday.

The British newspaper said neighbors were aware of Asner's identity, despite his using the assumed name Dr. Georg Aschner.

The same day the video was taken, Austrian officials reiterated their earlier statements that Asner's health is not stable enough for travel to Croatia to face charges of genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes.

The Jerusalem-based Simon Wiesenthal Center, which tracks suspected Nazi war criminals, lists Asner as No. 4 on its list of the top 10 alleged Nazi war criminals living in freedom.
