Tribal leaders killed in Iraqi violence

MOSUL, Iraq, June 10 (UPI) -- Three leading tribal leaders, including the head of Saddam Hussein's family tribe, were killed in northern Iraq Tuesday, government officials said.

Sheik Ali al-Nida, leader of the al-Bou Nasir tribe that includes Saddam's family, was killed in an explosion, CNN reported.

In Mosul, gunmen killed two tribal leaders from Tal Afar, an Iraqi Interior Ministry official said. Sheikh Abdul Nour Mohammed al-Tahhan of the Obeid tribe and Sheikh Mohammed Khalil Hamash of the Halabid tribe were killed after attending a meeting.

Both Sunni Arabs were working to bring together Shiites and Sunni Turkmen in Tal Afar, which has a large Turkmen population.
