Search is on for killer Canadian bear

LA SARRE, Quebec, June 2 (UPI) -- Wildlife officials in northern Quebec searched Monday for a black bear that attacked and killed a 70-year-old woman Friday about 370 miles northwest of Ottawa.

Cecile Lavoie and her husband Alexandre, 73, were in a remote area on the banks of the Theo River when the bear attacked the woman, who had been separated from her husband while searching for a fishing spot, the Globe & Mail newspaper reported. When Alexandre Lavoie found his wife, her battered body was being dragged away by the animal, the newspaper said.

Officials said Lavoie chased the bruin and managed to scare it away from his wife for a time, but he couldn't carry her to safety and instead left to find help. When he returned, the bear was back.

"The bear was still around and the bear was aggressive," Sgt. Gregory Gomez del Prado of the Quebec provincial police told the Globe & Mail. "It was dark so it was hard to find the woman's body."

They were finally able to retrieve Cecile Lavoie's body Saturday morning after the bear had retreated into the woods.
