8 die in blasts near Danish embassy

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan, June 2 (UPI) -- A massive blast Monday near the Danish embassy in the Pakistani capital Islamabad killed eight people and injured many more.

The state-run Associated Press of Pakistan reported one of those killed was a foreigner but gave no details.

Police spokesman Asmatullah Marwat said the blast, believed to be a car bomb, also smashed windows on nearby buildings and wrecked dozens of cars. Those injured were taken to nearby hospitals.

Pakistan's foreign office ordered tightened security at other embassies to ensure protection of their staff, the APP reported.

The BBC reported the car bomb injured more than a dozen people. It said local TV pictures showed extensive damage to the Danish embassy building.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack but Danish legations have been under threat since some Danish newspaper earlier this year republished a cartoon depicting the prophet Mohammed, which offended some Muslims.
