ISLAMABAD, Pakistan, May 1 (UPI) -- Pakistani coalition leaders were to meet again on reinstating dismissed judges, an issue whose resolution may decide the future of the month-old government.
At their meeting Wednesday in Dubai, Asif Ali Zardari and Nawaz Sharif agreed to continue their discussions about those judges dismissed last year by President Pervez Musharraf during his brief emergency rule.
Zardari, who heads the Pakistan People's Party of his slain wife Benazir Bhutto, has a residence in Dubai. Sharif, who traveled to Dubai, heads a faction of the Pakistan Muslim League, and together, their parties lead the coalition government.
Communications Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan said Zardari and Sharif would meet again Thursday, the state-run Associated Press of Pakistan reported.
Wednesday was the deadline set previously for the reinstatement of the judges.
The decision to continue the talks raised hope the coalition might continue, Dawn newspaper reported. Both sides claimed that progress had been made.
Sharif reportedly is opposed to linking the reinstatement of the judges to constitutional reforms. The Zardari group supports such reforms, saying they would prevent judicial abuses in the future.
