52 mob suspects rounded up in Naples area

April 18, 2008 at 1:32 AM

NAPLES, Italy, April 18 (UPI) -- Police in Naples arrested 52 members of a major crime family Thursday, using information obtained from the imprisoned wife of a mob boss.

A total of 68 warrants were issued, the Italian news agency Ansa reported. Some of the suspects were already behind bars.

The informant was Anna Carrino, the wife of Francesco Bidognetti, sometimes known by the nickname "Cicciott' 'e Mezanotte," or "Midnight Fatty." Carrino was arrested in November and charged with passing messages from her imprisoned husband to his subordinates on the outside.

One of those arrested Thursday was Bidognetti's son.

Carrino has already given authorities information resulting in a number of major raids aimed at suspected members of the Camorra, the Neapolitan equivalent of the Sicilian Mafia.
