ROCKVILLE, Md., April 5 (UPI) -- Herbert Alexander, a political scientist known for his pioneering research into campaign financing, has died at the age of 80, a friend said.

Gloria Cornette said Alexander died April 3 in Rockville, Md., of lung cancer and its complications, The New York Times reported Saturday.

Alexander studied campaign finances before effective federal disclosure laws were enacted, the newspaper reported.

Tom Wicker, in his foreword to Alexander's 1972 book, "Money in Politics," said "practically no one knew anything" about campaign finance before Alexander's studies.

Alexander spent 40 years directing the work of the Citizens' Research Foundation, a non-profit organization.

The foundation began at Princeton and then moved to the University of Southern California, as Alexander switched universities.

Alexander is survived by three sons, five grandchildren and his companion, Barbara Seidel.
