FORT WORTH, Texas, April 3 (UPI) -- Officials in Fort Worth, Texas, say they are trying to stop thieves from stealing parts from equipment used to warn motorists of high-water crossings.
Cameras are planned at the warning sites as the next step. Since December, parts have been stolen from about one-third of the city's 18 high-water systems, rendering them useless and a potentially deadly hazard, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram said. Additional sites are planned.
Flooding is a major problem in Fort Worth, which has about 250 flood-prone areas.
The warning devices, using a conduit, transducer, solar panel and antenna, activate warning lights when water on roads rises to a certain level. A sign tells motorists that when the light is flashing, consider the road closed.
