Canadian detainee in Mexico despondent

OTTAWA, March 20 (UPI) -- A Canadian woman held in a Mexican prison for two years says she's been told Mexico won't release her without a trial, the Canwest News Service reported.

In a telephone interview with the news agency from the prison in Guadalajara, Brenda Martin, 51, said she learned of the refusal during a visit from Jason Kenney, parliamentary secretary to Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper.

She said Kenney told her the Mexicans were demanding she face trial in connection with an Internet fraud scheme her former boss was convicted of, and which she claims she had no role in, in her capacity as the man's chef.

She said Kenney told her Mexico wanted guarantees she would also serve half of her sentence in a Canadian prison, Canwest said.

"I told him that if I get sentenced to 15 years and I have to serve half my time in prison in Canada I will stay here and kill myself -- that's it. I am not going back to Canada to go to prison," Martin said.
