Saying 'hello' on bus gets man stabbed

TORONTO, March 19 (UPI) -- A Toronto man was recovering Wednesday from three stabs wounds police said he incurred simply for saying hello to a stranger on a city bus.

Police were circulating a description of the suspect following the attack midday Monday, when the unidentified 30-year-old victim was knifed three times in the side when he and the attacker left the bus, the Canwest News Service reported.

Detective Jim Brons said the attacker got on the bus and sat beside the victim, who made eye contact and said hello.

"Ten minutes later, the suspect blew up at him and asked him why he said hi when they didn't know each other," Brons said.

The victim then apologized and got no response, he said.

"But when they both got on the sidewalk, the suspect took out a knife and stabbed him three times," the detective told Canwest. "Then he didn't even run away -- he just walked off like nothing happened."

The victim was in satisfactory condition Wednesday, the report said.
