Kevin Johnson seeks Sacramento mayorship

SACRAMENTO, March 6 (UPI) -- Former NBA all-star point guard Kevin Johnson says he is running for mayor of his hometown of Sacramento, Calif.

Johnson, a Sacramento developer who turned 42 Tuesday, announced Wednesday evening he is challenging Mayor Heather Fargo, the Sacramento Business Journal reported.

Johnson has until Friday to file his candidacy papers. Fargo filed to run for her third term Monday.

Johnson is chief executive officer of St. Hope, which runs charter schools. He also has completed development projects in Oak Park.

He starred at the University of California, Berkeley and was the seventh pick in the 1987 draft. He went on to play from 1987-88 for the Cleveland Cavaliers and 1988-98 and 2000 for the Phoenix Suns. He was a three-time NBA all-star.
