NAIROBI, Kenya, March 6 (UPI) -- Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki is urging the country's reopened Parliament to pass power-sharing legislation.

Kibaki, speaking before Parliament, urged legislators to pass the legislation he agreed to with his former rival for the presidency, Raila Odinga, who is expected to become the country's first prime minister if the legislation is adopted, the Voice of America reported Thursday.

"I believe honorable members will agree that the accord is a victory for all Kenyans, laying the foundation for peace and stability in our country," said Kibaki. "The successful implementation of the Accord will require goodwill, unity, good faith and integrity from this House and all our country's leaders."

The agreement would create the position of prime minister, but the specific powers held by the office have not yet been agreed upon.

The bill would also create a cabinet comprised equally of members of Kibaki's party and Odinga's opposition party.
