Israeli AG supports same-sex adoptions

JERUSALEM, Feb. 10 (UPI) -- Israeli Attorney General Menachem Mazuz ruled Sunday that citizens in same-sex unions should be able to adopt children just like heterosexual couples.

The ruling from the country's top legal official essentially means gays will be able to become official guardians to their partner's child through adoption, Ynetnews.com reported.

Manuz said that since there was no law denying same-sex couples the right to adopt a child, such requests should be treated as any other adoption proceeding.

The attorney general clarified his ruling by stating his decision only verified the regulations already in place, but did say Child Services would have the final say on any potential adoptions.

Ynetnews.com said, according to Manuz, a prospective adoptive parent's sexual orientation is only one of numerous attributes that would likely be considered by adoption officials.
