MIAMI, Feb. 3 (UPI) -- Convicted sex offenders who have been living under the Julia Tuttle Causeway bridge in Miami learned Sunday that they are being evicted.
They were visited by Florida Department of Correction parole officers who said the residents have until Monday to leave, The Miami Herald reported.
The men began sleeping under the bridge because of a Miami residency ordinance that does not allow convicted sex offenders to live within 2,500 feet of a school. State law is less restrictive, allowing offenders to live just outside a 1,000-foot limit.
The state Department of Corrections said no offenders were ever assigned to sleep under the bridge but the location was approved because offenders said it was just about impossible to find a place to live.
"What are we supposed to do? Where are we supposed to go?" asked Juan Carlos Martin, a causeway bridge resident first assigned to the bridge by the state Corrections Department in January 2007.
