Snowmobiler killed in Canadian avalanche

VANCOUVER, British Columbia, Feb. 2 (UPI) -- An avalanche killed a 23-year-old snowmobiler in Canada's British Columbia, officials said.

Officials said the man, whose name had not been released, was snowmobiling with nine other people when the avalanche occurred Friday near Elkford, the Canwest News Service reported Saturday.

Police said in a statement that while the man's body was found immediately after the snow slide, rescuers were unable to revive him.

"Rescuers on scene were able to locate the male within minutes using avalanche transceivers, but then struggled to remove him as he was found buried approximately two meters (6.5 feet) beneath the snow and trapped under his snowmobile," police said.

Elkford Mayor Dean McKerracher said the avalanche fatality, the seventh in British Columbia this season, is a known risk for area snowmobilers.

"Avalanches are always a risk in the backcountry and these guys know that," McKerracher said.
