Guard helicopter lands on golf course

HAMMOND, La., Jan. 21 (UPI) -- A military UH-60 Blackhawk helicopter made an emergency landing on a golf course near Mandeville, La., to check a minor problem.

Two helicopters were on a routine training mission when a warning light began flashing on one of them, said Maj. Michael Kazmierzak, a public affairs officer with the Louisiana National Guard, the New Orleans Times-Picayune reported Monday.

"It's just like in your automobile. It doesn't always mean something is wrong, but it means you should probably check it out," Kazmierzak said.

Army procedure says when the "transmission chip light indicator" flashes on a Blackhawk, the pilot must land immediately.

And in this case the nearest safe landing zone was the Beau Chene Country Club golf course.

The chopper was on the ground for about 15 minutes before taking off and returning to the Army National Guard's 1/244th Air Assault Helicopter Battalion in Hammond.
