Rowdies blamed for escalator injuries

ATLANTA, Jan. 1 (UPI) -- Transit riders in Atlanta, including football fans going to a bowl game, tumbled after losing their footing on a malfunctioning escalator, injuring 11.

Officials of the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority blamed the malfunction on rowdies they said were jumping on the escalator, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported Tuesday.

Many of the riders on the public transit escalator appeared to be Auburn and Clemson fans going to the bowl game Monday at the Georgia Dome. The accident occurred about an hour before kickoff.

"Eyewitnesses say there were some people horsing around on the escalator," said MARTA spokeswoman Joselyn Baker. "People should learn from this not to mess around."

"From what I felt, it was like somebody pulled a pin out of the escalator and we all came tumbling down," an Auburn fan told the newspaper.
