Syria sets condition for Mideast talks

DAMASCUS, Syria, Nov. 16 (UPI) -- Syrian President Bashar al-Assad says any peace initiative between Israel and the Palestinians must include the Golan Heights.

Assad met Friday morning with Arab League Secretary General Amre Mousa to discuss the upcoming U.S.-hosted Mideast peace talks in Annapolis, Md., Sana reports.

The two also discussed Iraq, the Palestinian territories and Syrian preparations for holding the next Arab summit in Damascus.

Assad said any attempt to achieve a just and comprehensive peace in the region must include the Syrian Golan.
