Young woman wins landmark age ruling

LONDON, Nov. 12 (UPI) -- An exclusive London club plans to appeal a landmark ruling favoring a 20-year-old secretary who says she was told she was too young for her job.

A London employment tribunal ruled Megan Thomas was unfairly dismissed and discriminated against by the Eight Member Club, which has about 800 members, The Independent reported Monday.

Thomas, from Shirley Oaks Village, Surrey, benefited from a new age discrimination law originally aimed at older workers, the Independent reported.

In its appeal, the club will show it employs many young people and that Thomas was fired because her work was not satisfactory, a spokesman told the Independent.

The club advertises itself as a "discreet and private haven in which to enjoy the simple pleasures of sublime drinks, card play and shooting pool," the Independent reported.
