Foreign students increase in United States

NEW YORK, Nov. 12 (UPI) -- A report by a New York non-profit has found enrollment in U.S. colleges by foreign students has increased for the first time in five years.

The report, Open Doors 2007, authored by the Institute of International Education with support from the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, found the number of foreign students studying in U.S. colleges and universities during the 2006-07 school year rose 3 percent from the previous year to nearly 583,000, USA Today reported Monday.

Of the 702 colleges and universities that responded to the report's survey, 57 percent reported an increase in the amount of foreign students, while 24 percent reported no change in the amount of foreign enrollments and 19 percent reported a decline in the amount of foreign students.

Additionally, the report said the number of U.S. students studying abroad rose 8.5 percent during the 2005-06 school year to a record 223,534.
