Putin warns against U.S. missile shield

LISBON, Portugal, Oct. 26 (UPI) -- Russian President Vladimir Putin said the U.S. plan for a missile shield in Europe is akin to the 1962 Cuban missile crisis.

Speaking during an EU summit in Lisbon, Portugal, Putin said the situation was "technologically similar," though not as threatening as the United States and Russia are no longer enemies, the BBC reported Friday.

The Cuban missile crisis was sparked when a U.S. spy plane flying over Cuba discovered Soviet missile bases being built on the communist island.
