Three Israeli strikes in Gaza kill 11

JERUSALEM, Sept. 27 (UPI) -- Three Israeli military operations in the Gaza Strip killed at least 11 Palestinians late Wednesday and early Thursday, Israeli media reported.

Of those killed, seven were known to be militants either from Hamas or The Army of Islam, Israel's Haaretz newspaper reported.

The first of two airstrikes was near Beit Hanun, where two Hamas militants were killed and five other people were wounded. The second airstrike was on a car near Gaza City, in which five Army of Islam militants were killed. The military said the car contained rockets about to be launched against Israel.

Wednesday night, Israel shelled a building in a northern Gaza town targeting a suspected militant cell that specialized in anti-tank combat. That attack killed four people and injured another 11, the report said.

The strikes occurred a day after Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak said on Army Radio the government was considering a major Gaza offensive following June's takeover of the region by Hamas militants.
