BAGHDAD, Sept. 24 (UPI) -- Iraq's Supreme Criminal Court has resumed the "southern Iraq uprising" case in which 15 of Saddam Hussein’s alleged henchmen are on trial.
The court heard testimony Monday against the defendants, who are charged with committing genocide and crimes against humanity during the 1991 Shiite uprising in which at least 100,000 Iraqis were killed, reported KUNA.
All 15 defendants appeared in court, including Sultan Hashim, Ali Hassan al-Majid, and Hussein Rashid al-Tekriti, who have already been sentenced to execution.
Al-Majid, also known as “Chemical Ali,” has already been charged with personally overseeing the executions of numerous Iraqi’s without trial in Basra in 1991.
One witnesses told the court Monday that Chemical Ali had ordered the execution of 25 young Iraqis without trial during the uprising and another said he ordered the execution of 200 Iraqis in a single day.
Al-Majid denied all allegations and claimed that he was not even in Basra at the time of the uprising.
