London most expensive for dining

LONDON, Sept. 12 (UPI) -- An international survey found London has surpassed Paris and Tokyo to top a list of the world's most expensive cities for dining out.

Zagat restaurant guides took surveys of between 5,000 and 10,000 people in 45 major cities around the world to find the average cost of a three-course restaurant meal. The cost per diner in London rose 2.9 percent from one year ago to $79.44, Sky News reported Wednesday.

The London price, which includes tax, service and one drink, surpassed the amount of money needed for a meal in Tokyo, which fell from first place last year to third with an average price of $71.34.

Paris came in second this year at $71.88. By comparison, an average New York meal costs only $39.22.

"It's astonishing to see how expensive the London dining scene has become, but the city still offers many great values -- both in terms of quality and price," said company spokesman Tim Zagat.
