North Korean floods have killed 600

PYONGYANG, North Korea, Aug. 26 (UPI) -- The estimated number of people killed in the recent flooding in North Korea has more than doubled to 600, media sources said.

While previous estimates had only 300 people perishing, The Financial Times said Sunday that North Korea's official media now estimates a minimum of 600 people died during the natural disaster.

"According to the information available from the Central Statistics Bureau, torrential rain, strong winds and landslides left at least 600 people dead or missing and thousands of people wounded,” the Korea Central News Agency said this weekend.

The agency also cited the wholesale damage to property throughout the nation that the flooding and massive rainfall caused.

"The unusually heavy rain caused huge material losses to (North Korea), creating unprecedented difficulties in people’s living and economic construction," the state media group said.

The Times said 100,000 people were also made homeless by the flooding, that represented the worst in North Korea in several decades.
