Suspensions widespead in Indiana schools

INDIANAPOLIS, Aug. 26 (UPI) -- Public schools across Indiana hand out up to 1,700 student suspensions each school day, The Indianapolis Star reported.

In an analysis conducted by the Star, Indiana’s 1,800 schools reported 313,322 suspensions in the 2005-06 school year. About 100 schools actually had more total suspensions then they had students.

Most of the suspensions were for offenses like fighting, destroying property or possession of drugs or weapons. Most suspensions were given to high school and middle school students, the Star reported.

Teachers at Indiana’s schools are looking to find ways to deal with students who regularly cause trouble. In place of suspension, in which the student is sent home for up to a week, more and more schools are considering alternative learning facilities, the Star reported.
