Former Sen. Daniel Brewster dead at 83

OWINGS MILL, Md., Aug. 20 (UPI) -- Daniel Baugh Brewster, a former U.S. senator and decorated war hero has died in Owings Mill, Md., of liver cancer at age 83.

Brewster overcame a public battle with alcoholism and a corruption scandal yet captured the hearts of his friends and his state, The Baltimore Sun reported Monday.

"His life was devoted to his country and to the state of Maryland," said his son Gerry. "It wasn't a perfect life. He made mistakes and he had setbacks, but he became an inspiration by overcoming those mistakes."

"He was a hero in every way," adds former Gov. William Donald Schaefer.

Brewster led assault waves in Guam in 1944 and in Okinawa in 1945 with the Marines. He was wounded seven times in three separate battles

He served as a U.S. senator from Maryland from 1963 to 1969.

He is survived by his wife, Judy Lynn Aarsand, and three sons.
