Brazil seeks arrest of fugitive Putin foe

MOSCOW, July 14 (UPI) -- A Brazilian judge issued an arrest warrant Friday for Boris Berezovsky, an arch political foe of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The ruling in Sao Paulo could provide a means for Moscow to get its hands on the fugitive financier, who had been given political asylum in Great Britain in 2003.

The Telegraph said Brazil has an extradition treaty with the United Kingdom. It was unclear if the law would allow Berezovsky to be transferred to the Brazilians, who could then conceivably hand him over to Russia.

The Brazilian charges allege Berezovsky laundered money from an investment company fronted by an associate through the Sao Paulo Corinthians soccer team.
