Russia investigates smuggling

MOSCOW, June 1 (UPI) -- Russian officials Friday investigated an attempted smuggling of technical documents related to weapons of mass destruction from the Urals region.

"Members of the Urals customs service have opened two criminal cases (into the smuggling) of technical documents that could be used in weapons production," the Federal Customs Service said, RIA Novosti reported.

The customs service said the 28 booklets of technical documents and reports were worth $3.6 million.

Officials did not say where the papers were seized or whether there had been any arrests, RIA Novosti reported.

The Urals region shares a border with Kazakhstan.
