Cameron calls for charter school system

LONDON, May 23 (UPI) -- David Cameron, the leader of Britain's Conservative Party, has vowed to introduce charter schools into his nation's education system.

Citing perceived success of such independent schools in the United States, Cameron said the introduction of charter schools would give British children an improved education if they are run with fair admissions policies, The Telegraph reported Wednesday.

Yet with many of his fellow Tory Party members calling for an end to grammar schools throughout the nation, Cameron said his controversial vow symbolized leadership.

"I lead. I don't follow my party. I lead them. This is the direction which we must go to deliver the aspiration, the opportunity and the social mobility that all of us Conservatives feel passionate about," he said.

But Cameron also downplayed his party's fervent opposition to a grammar school-based system, the British newspaper said.

"It's a policy we didn't introduce, we wouldn't introduce," he said, "that wouldn't be sustainable even if we did, and isn't anyway the right thing to do."
