WICHITA, Kan., May 8 (UPI) -- The death toll in Kansas from the deadly tornado that tore through two counties last week rose to 11 after an injured police officer passed away.

Another 13 people injured during twister remain under medical care.

While confusion hampered initial casualty reports, authorities finally got a handle on the matter as residents returned to their homes Monday.

The tornado that stuck major portions of Kansas topped the National Weather Service's Enhanced Fujita Scale in to magnitude.

The 1.7-mile-wide storm was the most severe tornado in the United States in the last eight years and the first deadly tornado in southern Kansas since 1967, KAKE-TV said.
