Long-time Cuban dissident released

HAVANA, April 24 (UPI) -- A Cuban dissident who spent 17 years behind bars has been freed, while two others have been sentenced to lengthy terms.

Jorge Luis Garcia Perez, was released this month following years of hunger strikes, an escape attempt and allegations that he was beaten while in prison, The Miami Herald reported Tuesday.

Meanwhile, lawyer Rolando Jimenez Posada was sentenced to 12 years this week and independent journalist Oscar Sanchez Madan was sentenced to four years in prison earlier this month.
