Russia eliminates more chemical weapons

MOSCOW, April 21 (UPI) -- Russia plans to build four more disarmament facilities before 2012 to dispose of chemical weapons, Itar-Tass reported Saturday.

"The Russian Federation realizes that there is still a lot to be done," Viktor Kholstov, deputy head of the Federal Industry, told the news agency in announcing Russia disposed of 20 percent of its chemical weapons more than a week ahead of schedule.

"Russia scrapped 456 tons more chemical weapons than it was planned by the federal program nine days before the deadline," Kholstov said.

The four new disarmament facilities will dispose of Russia's remaining 32,000 tons of war gases, Kholstov said, adding that Russia will continue to need international support for the disposal of such weapons.
