JERUSALEM, April 17 (UPI) -- Israel's Shin Bet intelligence agency claimed Tuesday Iran has been recruiting visiting Israelis to spy for Tehran, the Jerusalem Post reported.
At a Jerusalem news conference, an unidentified security official said the practice has been going on for two years, with Iran detaining Israelis trying to enter Iran, and sometimes forbidding them to leave until they agree to provide information.
While Israel doesn't consider Iran an enemy state, Iran only allows Israelis to enter the country after visiting its consulate in Turkey, where the information gathering begins, the official alleged.
He said more than 100 Israelis have applied for visas to Iran in the last two years, 10 of whom were questioned by the Shin Bet and discovered to have been recruited as spies by the Iranians.
He told of one Israeli who was warned if he didn't cooperate, things would not go well for his family in Iran, the report said.
There are about 25,000 Jews living in Iran.
