The three were not identified, but one was described as a security guard.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution said at least four men attempted to rob Glitz Jewelers in the Greenbriar Mall Saturday. At least two robbers in ski masks fled the scene, pursued by police and mall guards, a witness told the newspaper.

Two of the gunshot victims were in stable condition Sunday, but the third remained in critical condition at Grady Memorial Hospital.

Atlanta police would not comment on why gunfire became part of the robbery.

The manager of the mall said that Saturday's incident marked the first violent incident at the mall in more than three years.

But a baker who works at one of the mall's restaurants told the newspaper that several weeks earlier her boss was robbed just outside one of the mall's entrances.
