Macedonia seizes heroin on Greek border

SKOPJE, Macedonia, March 2 (UPI) -- Macedonian police detained three people after officers allegedly found heroin in a Turkish bus trying to cross from Greece into Macedonia, Skopje media said.

Customs officers at the Bogorodica crossing point in southern Macedonia stopped the bus traveling from Istanbul, Turkey, to Pristina, in Serbia's Kosovo province, Bosnia's BHRT radio-television reported Friday.

Macedonian officers confiscated 11 pounds of heroin wrapped in six packets and hidden under a bus seat, BHRT said quoting Skopje media.

The Macedonian customs and police action comes as a new U.S. report released in Washington says Macedonia's borders are porous for transporting drugs from Asia across Balkan countries to Western Europe.

The U.S. State Department's International Narcotics Control Strategy Report suggests Macedonia will remain a major route for the transit of illegal drugs.
