Station broadcasts insurgent footage

CAIRO, Jan. 14 (UPI) -- Iraqi, Egyptian and U.S. officials are at odds over a renegade TV station that uses an Egyptian satellite to air tape of attacks on U.S. and Iraqi troops.

The satellite broadcaster Al-Zawraa frequently airs anti-Shiite messages and video of Iraqi insurgent attacks from a satellite platform based in Egypt. Egyptian officials have so far refused to shut the broadcasts down, angering their ally, the United States, Daily Variety reported Sunday.

The Iraqi government has threatened to sue anyone responsible for the broadcasts. Iraq successfully shut the Iraqi operation down in November 2006, but the broadcasts resumed a few days later using the Egyptian satellite.

"Al-Zawraa is glorifying the killing of American and Iraqi government officials, which we strongly object to. This needs to be taken care of," one U.S. government official told Daily Variety.
