Postal worker accused of gift card theft

DETROIT, Jan. 9 (UPI) -- A Detroit-area postal worker has been charged with stealing gift cards from the mail.

An affidavit from a postal inspector filed in federal court said that Wanda Darling admitted opening mail and taking the cards, the Detroit News reported. She worked at the processing center in Royal Oak.

"She estimated opening approximately 50 to 100 greeting cards, and using approximately 25 gift cards from various stores, including Toys 'R' Us, Target Sears and Marshall Fields," the affidavit said.

The investigation began when the post office started getting complaints about gift cards that vanished in the mail. Investigators sent a test greeting card with a Target gift card inside to a fictitious address and got it back opened and with the card missing.

The postal service said they also used hidden cameras to videotape Darling opening mail and shopping at Sears with stolen cards.

Darling faces five years in prison if convicted.
