Car bombs kill 68 in Iraq

BAGHDAD, Dec. 30 (UPI) -- Car bombs struck markets in a Shiite area of Baghdad and in a southern Shiite town, killing at least 68 people Saturday, Iraqi police said.

Three car bombs went off almost simultaneously near a shopping area in Baghdad's Hurriyah district, killing 37 civilians and wounding 76, an Interior Ministry official said.

An earlier car-bombing at a fish market in Kufa, a Shiite town about 100 miles south of Baghdad, killed 31 people and wounded 58, the Interior Ministry said.

A man blamed for the attack was cornered and killed by a mob as he walked away from the explosion, CNN reported.

All four blasts came hours after the execution of former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein. There was no immediate indication any were related to the hanging, the Interior Ministry said.

The attack also came on the eve of Eid al-Adha, the most important holiday of the Islamic year.
