Pilot ejects safely in fighter jet crash

SAN DIEGO, Nov. 30 (UPI) -- A U.S. Marine pilot ejected safely before his fighter jet crashed Thursday near a Southern California base.

The crash caused a small brush fire, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported. Fire department paramedics returned the pilot by ambulance to the Miramar Marine Corps Air Station. The pilot is part of a training squadron.

The plane that crashed was an F/A 18, a supersonic attack aircraft that can be either land- or carrier-based. A Navy spokesman said each plane costs $50 million.
