MANAGUA, Nicaragua, Nov. 20 (UPI) -- Nicaragua has made official is tough new abortion law that bans terminating pregnancies under all conditions, The New York Times reported Monday.

President Enrique Bolanos signed the repeal of a previous law that made it legal for women to have an abortion once three doctors agreed that the pregnancy was life-threatening.

Last month lawmakers voted 52-0 in favor of banning abortions, even in the case of life-threatening pregnancies.

The vote came ahead of the Nov. 5 presidential election in which former Sandinista leader Daniel Ortega won decidedly over his closest contender, center-right candidate Eduardo Montealegre.

Ortega was a backer of some abortion rights during his presidency in the 1980s and a critic of the Catholic Church's stance on abortion.
