JERUSALEM, Nov. 7 (UPI) -- Police in Jerusalem and a gay rights group have agreed that a gay pride parade will occur as scheduled unless the High Court grants petitions to ban it.
The parade is set to begin at 11 a.m. Friday with a march, followed by a rally expected to end about 3 p.m.
Deputy Prime Minister Eli Yishai, who is chairman of the right-wing Shas Party, filed a petition as a private citizen to keep the parade from being held.
"I personally filed a petition as a citizen in a bid to prevent the abomination parade in the city's streets," he told Ynetnews.com. "Why didn't those people try and hold the parade in Mecca or at the Vatican? This is an explosive belt which could shake the entire Middle East."
Also Tuesday, about 700 students at the Netiv Meir Yeshiva held a rally to pray against the parade.
