Gay marriage bans projected for Va., Tenn.

WASHINGTON, Nov. 7 (UPI) -- Efforts to ban same-sex marriage appeared to be succeeding at the polls in Virginia and Tennessee Tuesday.

CNN projected that state constitutional amendments banning same-sex marriage would pass in Virginia and Tennessee, while a similar ban in Arizona trailed by a slim margin.

With 76 percent of the polls reporting, 48.3 percent voted for the ban in Arizona, while 51.7 percent voted against the proposition, The Arizona Republic said.

Votes were also being tallied on gay marriage bans in Colorado, Idaho, South Carolina, South Dakota and Wisconsin.

There were similar questions on the ballot in Colorado -- whether to ban same-sex marriages and whether to legalize civil unions, giving same-sex couples some of the same legal rights of married couples.

In Virginia, voters were asked if they want to amend the state constitution to define marriage as between one man and one woman, Stateline.org said.

Stateline.org said 20 states have adopted constitutional same-sex marriage bans and "no state has ever voted one down."

Last month, the New Jersey state Supreme Court ruled that the state constitution requires lawmakers to provide same-sex couples all the legal benefits of marriage, Stateline.org said.
