Nurse charged with raping 2 patients

MADISON, Wis., Nov. 4 (UPI) -- A nurse has been charged with sexually assaulting two patients in the emergency room at a Milwaukee-area hospital.

Brian Hoffart of Grafton allegedly committed the rapes at Froedtert Hospital in Wauwatosa in 2004 and 2005. The Wisconsin Department of Justice also charges that hospital officials tried to cover up the earlier rape, which the hospital denies.

The hospital said Hoffart no longer works there.

In another case, Julie Thao, a nurse at a Madison hospital, has been charged with criminal neglect of a teenager who died during delivery of her baby. Investigators said Thao mistakenly gave Jasmine Gant an epidural anesthetic intravenously, instead of the penicillin prescribed to treat the 16-year-old's strep infection.

The baby survived. The anesthetic was supposed to be injected in the spinal column.

Hospital and nursing groups say Thao should not face criminal charges for making a mistake.
