WASHINGTON, Oct. 24 (UPI) -- Former U.S. Education Secretary William Bennett said U.S. voters can keep Congress in check and the global view of the United States remains positive.
Bennett, a Republican strategist and CNN political analyst, fielded questions from a national audience as part of CNN's "Broken Government" series, the cable news channel said Tuesday.
Bennett said the country's founders distinguished the duties between the House and Senate -- the House had a more direct, local representation while the Senate took a more national view, CNN said. He said voters dissatisfied with their congressional representatives can vote them out of office, CNN said.
While condemning the United States is may be popular in some parts of the globe, Bennett said "many millions of people around the world love America."
Regarding reinstatement of a military draft, Bennett said political leaders were concerned that a draft would be an unpopular move, especially as the election draws close, CNN said. He said military leaders indicated they preferred a professional army because of its commitment.
Commenting on the GOP's poor showing in recent opinion polls, Bennett said in the CNN program that the media show a "demonstrable" liberal bias against the Republican Party.
