U.N. Security Council debates N.Korea test

UNITED NATIONS, Oct. 9 (UPI) -- The U.N. Security Council issued a statement condemning North Korea's nuclear test after meeting in emergency session Monday.

Kenzo Oshima, the Japanese ambassador to the United Nations and council president this month, said after the meeting that experts would meet to discuss a draft resolution on sanctions.

"I didn't see any protectors of North Korea in that room this time," U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations John Bolton said.

Condemnation of the North Korean action has been loud worldwide. U.S. President George Bush called for immediate U.N. action and warned the United States will not tolerate the threat posed by a nuclear North Korea.

U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan issued a statement saying that the test violates international norms and the worldwide moratorium.

"It aggravates regional tensions in and around the Korean Peninsula, and jeopardizes security both in the region and beyond," he said.

It was unclear whether North Korea's claims of a successful underground nuclear test were true, however. Analysts said the seismic activity produced by the blast was relatively small and could have been produced by conventional explosives or by a bomb the size of the one dropped on Hiroshima.
