BOCA RATON, Fla., Oct. 2 (UPI) -- Derek Brandon Jacobs, one of the first people in the world to bear an identification microchip, has died at 18 in a Florida motorcycle accident.

Jacobs -- a computer prodigy who gained worldwide attention when he and his parents appeared on NBC's "Today" show after being implanted with VeriChip identification tags -- died Saturday after losing control of his motorcycle in Boca Raton, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reported Monday.

Jacobs, who at 12 became the youngest person to receive Microsoft certification to run a professional computer network, had been set to graduate Florida International University this year after only two years, and had been examining medical school options.

"I can't imagine how much he could have accomplished," said Derek Jacobs' father, Jeffrey. "He wanted to combine his engineering and computer knowledge to come up with ideas no one else would have thought of."

Memorial services were scheduled for Wednesday at Gardens Memorial Park in Boca Raton.
